Scholarship Essay Tips...
When filling out the essay question for this scholarship, or for any, there are a few tips that may help your essay stand out from others.
Always check your spelling
Unfortunately, most websites, including this one, do not have spell checkers built in to the application form. However, a quick way around this would be to type up your essay in a program with a spell checker such as Microsoft Word then copy and paste your essay into the web form on the application page.
Watch your grammar and punctuation
As with spelling, grammar and punctuation are also very important. You need to give yourself every advantage when applying for scholarships and being noticed by the judges for something negative is going in the wrong direction. Using correct grammar and punctuation is one way to avoid that.
Keep your essay to the point
Try not to ramble during your essay. Do not use five paragraphs when only two will work. At the same time, don't give short, curt responses. While we are not counting words, you should write enough to adequately answer the question. Your responses give the judges a peek at your personality.
Use proper English
Avoid slang or other internet-speak at all costs. Do not curse or use words that are considered slang such as "bling" and do not use internet/chat abbreviations such as "IMHO" or "IIRC". Also, do not use emoticons (the punctuation smilies).
Overall, the point of filling out essay questions is to show judges your writing ability as well as to show off your personality. As in job interviews, you are selling yourself. You are the only one who can explain to the judges why you deserve this scholarship above all others. And often times, there is not much space to do this in so you need to be on point for the entire essay.
There is an application deadline (see the dates on the Apply Now! page) and unfortunately we can only choose one person per scholarship period. So please fill out the form and get the process started. Winners will be notified by email.
